OCTOBER: SNAPSHOTS

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
To-morrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.

The crows above the forest call;
To-morrow they may form and go.

O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow,
Make the day seem to us less brief.

Beguile us in the way you know;
Release one leaf at break of day;

At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away;

Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,

Whose clustered fruit must else be lost–
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.

    Love the weaving together of all my favorite things: nature, poetry and literature, and really good food and wine. Makes fall in the Pacific Northwest not only bearable, but beautiful. Thanks!

    Oh, so beautiful! I enjoy poetry so much more with pictures.

    Thank you for the photographs and the lovely October poem by Robert Frost. With the exception of the red maples, which are rare here on the Isle of Man, much of the poem could reflect an October day with the sun shining. Love to read your recipes. I’m just beginning to learn to cook! Will try the molasses bread this week. Thanks.
